SPIRIT OF ENNISKILLEN TRUST WINS 2011 GUARDIAN CHARITY AWARD
19th December 2011
Northern Ireland based charity, the Spirit of Enniskillen Trust, has won a Guardian Charity Award for its work with young people in promoting a better and shared future.
The Trust was chosen from almost 1000 entries to receive the award, which recognises excellence in small and medium–sized charities.
The Spirit of Enniskillen Trust was established in 1989 inspired by the words of the late Senator Gordon Wilson following the loss of his daughter, Marie, in the 1987 Enniskillen bomb. For more than 20 years it has engaged the energy, idealism and commitment of young people into the building of a shared, fair and diverse society. It supports a series of inter–linked projects working with young people in their schools, their communities and other divided regions internationally.
The Trust seeks to develop the capacity of young people to make a positive contribution to their community by leading change, engaging in dialogue and respecting identity and human rights. It is led by young people and it works for young people.
The judges said of the Spirit of Enniskillen Trust: “This is a truly inspirational charity that provides young people with the opportunity to make a real difference, both in their own community and in communities around the world.”
Commenting on the award, Michael Arlow, Director of the Spirit of Enniskillen Trust said: “We are delighted to have received this recognition. The award is testament to the commitment of the young people and volunteers involved in our work, people who are drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds but who share a common desire to affect positive change.”
As part of the award, the charity was given £6,000 prize money, one year’s membership of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations, a package of support from the Foundation for Social Improvement and a tailored package of media, marketing and communications training from the Media Trust.
